Formed in 1981 with members Steve Hardy. Brian Smith. Ian Thompson. and Dave King. The band recorded their first single Burn this Town at local studio Guardian Music based in Co Durham.
That led to a signing with Roadrunner Records and Music for Nations
for a three album deal. Battleaxe were invited by BBC Radio One to do a live session on the Friday Rock show with Tommy Vance and Tony Wilson producing, which brought about the release of their second album Power from the Universe. A full UK tour as special guests supporting Saxon, on their CRUSADER Tour established the band on the metal scene. Battleaxe was once again in support of Saxon at the LEEDS QUEENS HALL FEST which included TWISTED SISTER, ANVIL, and GIRL SCHOOL. Shortly after, the band were offered an imminent signing to Atlantic Records. However, Guitarist Steve Hardy, decided to call it a day for an unknown reason. The band was then left in limbo for the next two years until Mick Percy, and John Stormont, arrived. Unfortunately by then the band had lost its momentum and the Atlantic deal fell through. In 1995 the band were due to support US Glam band Madam X on a full UK tour but as the Headlining band had to cancel due to a bereavement, Battleaxe were asked to headline the tour which ended up being a huge success making many new fans along the way.
In 1998/99 everything slowed down for the band due to a influx of Grunge and Glam bands from the US, and drummer Ian Mccormack, decided to quit, the other guys sadly decided to call it a day too . Then, in 2008 thanks to two young Swedish guys who had set up a website in appreciation of Battleaxe, a new younger generation of Metal fans from all over the World were wanting to know more about the band, which un be known to Battleaxe had now become a small part of an era known as NWOBHM It was then we decided to set up our own web site and self release the the bands two old albums, along with a promotional EP NIGHTMARE ZONE on CD format... This brought the guys back to reform and perform their first live show in 18yrs at HBOA Festival in Germany thanks to the persistence of Jurgen Hedgwald.
Since 2010 the guys have been busy writing new material and making a number of music videos as well as performing at a number of popular Metal festivals including Bloodstock. In 2013 Battleaxe signed a deal with major label SPV Steamhammer who released the bands older albums as well as a long awaited 3rd album Heavy Metal Sanctuary. In Oct 2020 SPV Re-released Power from the Universe 12 inch vinyl on a special limited addition.
After a number of festivals the band started work on their fourth album and have almost completed the twelve tracks ready for a 2021 release.
The band have also recently signed a management deal with RS BAND MANAGEMENT AND PROMOTIONS who have already announced a UK tour and the new album release for 2021.
Right now the band are working on the fine tuning for the new album at White Wolf Recording Studios In Co Durham.
Just as soon as this pandemic has died down and live music venues can re open the band hope to be back on the road again big style with a great stage show and a powerful exiting Metal Rock set guaranteed to get those rusty heavy heads banging again.
The guys in the band would just like to say a big thank you to all the fans who have stuck by us over the years which helped us pull through some really bad shit... We really do appreciate it a hell of a lot and can't wait to get back on the road playing again to put on a great show and blast the place down for ya all as we love to do....
